With Hurricane Season gone, our attention shifts to travel issues brought on by wintry weather. I never minded driving in the rain, and I didn't like snow, but I really hated dense fog. Many of you will be driving or flying to family for the holidays so I'll try to focus on the weather that might affect traveling, especially when it comes to below-freezing conditions. Today is a classic example where both coasts have travel delays. While the southern states are looking great, not so much looking coast to coast. Let's begin in the Northeast and work our way west.
Air travel is a mess due to a broad upper low that has multiple surface lows. Fortunately, temperatures are mainly above freezing with icy roads restricted to the northern plains. The West Coast still has that "Atmospheric River" from San Francisco northward to Seattle.
There is lots of snow falling at higher elevations, but below 7,000' it's mainly rain. This will be what I will be looking for as we approach Thanksgiving week. For now, let's enjoy the delightfully cooler and drier feel across all of the South that has pushed through the Yucatan.
IF you're dressed for it, this air feels great! Look at that dew point (16) in Houston. We'll stay in this airmass into Saturday with the muggies beginning to come back by Sunday.
