A band of showers moved through over night leaving rain totals of 1-2" on both sides of the Lake. It was a welcomed soaking ahead of a quick burst of Arctic air that will make for several chilly nights Friday & Saturday mornings. Our local NWS office has expanded the earlier Cold Air/Weather Advisory to include all of the North Shore, mainly because of the expect wind chills in the high teens to lower 20s. A light freeze is expected both days while the South Shore should stop in the mid to upper 30s.
We will not see a hard freeze south of Lake P. because the axis of the upper trough has shifted to the NE leaving many a WSW upper flow for us. To get a hard freeze or significant snowfall here, I've drawn the upper pattern on today's satellite view that would be needed.
We don't have that, but it's something I'll be looking for during the next couple of winter months. In the short term, a cold front will plunge down off shore tonight bringing colder air on brisk north winds. You'll need heavy weather gear, Gang!
Because the winds will be so strong later tonight, we won't see the big temperature spread between the North Shore & South.
As winds turn more easterly by Saturday morning, lows should begin to moderate. Our next big weather maker is lining up off the West Coast. Already WPC is indicating a potential heavy rain risk.
There could develop a widespread band of 5-8" amounts, especially if the front stalls before plowing through on Wednesday. Get ready for a wild temperature ride over the next 7 days.
As I mentioned earlier, I have moved some of my more tender tropical plants into my protected He-Shed for the next couple of nights. I might get them back outside on Saturday as the warmer air returns. However, next week will see another drastic temperature drop. Get use to it folks, it's called December/Winter! Snow Geeks, stay tuned! Looking for something to do this weekend, come by Degas Galley on Magazine Saturday 6-8 PM where several artists (including Brenda) will have items that will make for perfect Christmas gifts.
And don't forget to pick up the December/January Issue of Inside New Orleans that features my Brenda with her story about brendabreckart.com.
