We all know at this time of the year, if it doesn't rain, the heat is on. An upper high over us today will shift northward and weaken as a tropical wave drifts across the Gulf Wed-Saturday. The wave/weak disturbance should increase clouds and storms, resulting in less hot temperatures. But not today or tomorrow, where NWS has an Extreme Heat Warning beginning 10 AM on Wednesday.
The interaction between the upper high & an upper low over the Bahamas is creating screaming NE wind shear, which will limit/kill any surface development of this tropical wave. NHC must feel the same, as they have not hatched out an area over the northern Gulf for development. None of the models see anything forming, so let's not get concerned when there is nothing to worry about. Even yesterday's Invest 94L is gone.
Clearly, the Saharan Dust Layer (SAL) continues to suppress activity over the MDR. Look for the SAL to disappear by mid-August. So the only other thing to watch is how soon does the tropical moisture arrive to bring us some heat relief?
We have another 6-8 weeks of this god awful heat, but it's encouraging to see how nice it is behind a front up north. Oh what a day to be in Boston or NYC.
Storms have reached Panama City Beach today. Expect some to approach us by late Wednesday. Too late to keep us from flirting with 100.
My yard will welcome the needed moisture and I'll appreciate any cooling we get. Today was a beautiful day on Grand Isle as workers prepare for the opening of the nation's oldest (97th) fishing rodeo.
Hopefully I'll see some of you down on the Island to fish & party. You don't need to be there to get in on the Grand Prize, which is $10,000 !!! Go to tarponrodeo.org to register and just maybe I'll call out your name Saturday night. Stay tuned!
