Hurricane Alex made landfall as a strong Cat. 2 storm shortly after 9 PM tonight. He is the strongest June Hurricane since Alma(Cat 3) in 1966 and Audrey (Cat. 4) in 1957. Bloggers are saying..."Ah Ha, we told you so...a super active season is coming and this is just the beginning." Well, let's look at past history. Thanks to Kim Vaughn's research, since 1910 there have been 14 years with June Hurricanes. Of those 14 years, 2 ended up above average (11 being ave.), 5 were average BUT 7 were BELOW average in total number of storms. Of course that's not what the "experts" are predicting for this season. Stay tuned!
In the short term, we are in a very deep tropical airmass and the remains of a weak cold front will stagger slowly down to the Gulf Coast enhancing our shower chances Thursday and Friday. As long as no low pressure forms , hopefully the second half of the weekend will see more sunshine and fewer storms?

Since 1851 there has been 31 hurricanes with 19 of them making US landfalls.
Hurriance Audrey of 1957 hit Louisiana on June 27th killing over 500 people
I can't remember Audrey because I was only a year old but I do remember HILDA followed shortly by BETSY.....That was BEFORE we had pumps to keep flooding to a minimum.
"Stay tuned to see if VIPIR is on to something forming later this week along the old front."
Is this still something we need to be watching?
