Heat Advisory? Why?

I kept wondering why NWS had placed SE LA under a Heat Advisory since by defintion, a Heat Advisory is issued when the Heat Index is expected to exceed 105 degrees. That was happening up at BTR, but not down by us. So what's up? I called them and was told local NWS offices have the freedom to lower the criteria and issue advisories if they feel it's warranted by local conditions. NWS felt since several of the oil clean up workers began feeling the symptoms of heat exhaustion, they would issue an advisory. So their focus is on the clean up workers and NOT the general population. The clean up workers must wear all that protective gear so they really have a heat issue problem. The rest of us...use common sense when working outdoors and stay hydrated.

Little change is likely in our hot and mostly dry pattern thru the weekend. The tropics are quiet.

Gee whizz what you got against the NWS? Seems like when there are hundreds if not thousands of people(many of which are volunteers not just fisherman who are used to working outdoors) working on the oil clean up spill and some start to show signs of over heating, including their area in the heat advisory is looking out for the general public. I'm sure you know or do now that there is not strict written criteria that must be followed to the letter, each NWS office has different criteria set by that office and they can and do modify it as needed. They do this often esp when the general public is at risk such as major events taking place outdoors (oil clean up) that involves the public being exposed to the elements for long periods of time.

Silly CAVEMAN. I was not bashing the NWS, just wondering why they changed/lowered their criteria without ANY explaination. I felt without explaining why they were issuing the Heat Advisory, they scared many folks into thinking it was hotter than most June days. Heat Advisory has been dropped, but the folks working the clean up won't feel any different.

Well seems you always search for and make negative comments about the NWS alot. When you stated "NOT" all in caps looking out for the general public that is pretty much bashing them. I wouldn't be surprised if they include the coastal regions again during future advisory issued.

Unfortunately the general public has no idea how to even look up a heat advisory let alone read the discussion as to why it was issued. I highly doubt the issuing of a heat advisory scared anyone esp us here on the coast that are used to the heat during the summer.
