It’s easy to Monday morning quarterback, but what harm would it have done for NHC to wait another 12 hours before naming Gabrielle yesterday? They will claim they had the data from the Hurricane Hunter plane, but once again there was no ground truth. No weather station on Puerto Rico had winds 40+ so what’s the rush? Years from now when folks look back on 2013, they will probably think it was an active season, but upon further review (football lingo) they’ll find the ACE (Accumulated Cyclone Energy) index to be one of the lowest ever. Now I know we can still turn active, but this appears to be one of those years where every swirl doesn’t develop. None of the computer models develops a hurricane during the next 10-14 days. In fact, WORLDWIDE there are no Hurricanes or Typhoons anywhere. Truly amazing during the so called era of global warming that was to cause more frequent & more intense Hurricanes. We still will see a “burst” of activity during the next 2-3 weeks so now is not the time to feel we can’t get a late September threat. Stay tuned!
In the short term, it appears some drier air will spread southward reducing our daily rain coverage for the next 2-3 days. Highs will remain 90+ with no cold front in sight.
