Once again the weather headlines are focused on Hawaii, and rightly so. Hurricane Lane is weakening, but it is still a large and powerful Cat. 3. As I mentioned last night, the main impacts will be heavy rains and flooding with the strongest, damaging winds remaining just south & west. This is a situation that would make me nervous if I lived in Maui or Oahu. Most computer models turn Lane sharply to the west BEFORE in slams into Maui. However, several models have the turn coming too late with the core of the storm striking land. One thing they have that we don’t is elevation, but it’s a double edged sword. The steep terrain will make for fast flowing rivers of water racing down the mountains potentially causing serious damage and possible fatalities. Hawaii is well prepared for this storm, but even the best of plans can fail during an emergency. In our part of the World, the Tropics remain dead, however, NHC keeps saying a wave moving off of Africa COULD develop once it’s out in the central Atlantic. Until there is something to follow, we need not worry about something that might never happen.
Locally, we should see one more day of dry weather before our daily showers return. Highs are likely to be 90+ for at least another 2-3 weeks, with the exceptions being the days with more clouds and showers. Stay tuned!
