I’m more convinced that tropical activity (or lack of) is connected to the phase of the MJO (Madden Julian Oscillation) than water temperatures and wind shear. Of course all are important in the making of the cake (hurricane), but it seems IF the MJO is in the unfavorable (sinking air) phase, tropical activity is unlikely to happen. That’s where we have been for the past 4 -5 weeks after an active early start to the 2018 hurricane season. The Eastern Pacific is predicted to go nuts for the next 7-10 days with Hawaii possibly being affected by a strong storm. Another system could move much closer to the Baja Peninsula while we stay quiet in our part of the World. We still are 2 weeks from the most active (historically) part of our season so even though we are quiet now, that doesn’t mean much. August 15th through October 10th is really our Prime Time as it’s way too soon to relax. As of tonight, no model has anything developing in the Gulf during the next 7-10 days.
I am extremely proud of FOX 8 dominating the recent July rating book. Management understands NOLA wants people they have known for years to give them news, sports & weather. For years, that was Ch. 4. No more. FOX 8 is number one in almost all news rating periods. I may be retired, but I’m still FOX 8 proud!
