Quiet Tropics...August Front...

Really amazing how the MJO controls the Tropics.   Where (Western & central Pacific) it’s in the favorable (rising air) phase, there are several typhoons/hurricanes.  In fact, Hurricane Lane has popped an eye on this evening’s satellite loops indicating he’s major hurricane intensity.  His path will get uncomfortably close to many the Hawaiian islands tomorrow, hopefully staying far enough south to spare them of the strongest winds and seas.   The rest of the World is in the unfavorable (sinking air) phase with the Gulf, Caribbean and the Atlantic having no activity.  Models continue to show this trend continuing through the rest of August, and that is a good thing.

Locally, we had more heavy downpours today and probably will see some more tomorrow.  But there is relief coming by Wednesday as a rare August front should push through us into the northern Gulf.  That will sweep away the clouds & humidity and result in cooler night time lows.  Days will continue to be 90+, but the feel to the air will not be as oppressive.   South winds will bring back rain chances on Friday into the weekend and we are way not done with summer.   Once into mid-September the shorter days and longer nights start to show up and October usually gives us our best weather of the year.  However, this year it will be hard pressed to beat the great stretch of weather we had in the Spring.  Stay tuned!
