Cold Air Chasing Precip...
Our past heaviest snowfalls happened when we had a very shallow layer of Arctic air plow through followed by Gulf moisture overrunning (lifted up over) the below freezing surface air. The set up this Tuesday will be the opposite as the precip (rain) will be along and behind the front with the cold air chasing the precip before drier air sweeps in. So the question remains, will there be any moisture still falling when temps get cold enough to change it over to snow? My feeling is yes if you are on the North Shore and probably not if you live south. IF the changeover happens, it will be between 4 AM & 9 AM Tuesday. Freezes are still coming to both sides of the Lake with 22-25 North on Wednesday AM and 29-33 South. You have all day Monday to get your home & yard ready. I'll leave my potted flowers outside until late PM and bring them into my heated back shed before dark. I will drain my garden hoses & put faucet covers on just to be sure in case temps fall lower than predicted. I have a decision to make regarding my grapefruit tree. Do I pull off the rest of my crop (roughly 70) or leave them on since only a light freeze is expected? I'll make that call tomorrow. Otherwise, it should be a delightful Monday with plenty of sunshine and highs around 70 before the bottom drops out for Tuesday into Thursday. Thursday PM starts the warming trend that will last through next weekend. The core of this Arctic blast will thankfully stay well to our north. Chicago could see below zero highs Tuesday & Wednesday! Been there, done that. Stay tuned!
