January, err...February Thaw...

I've talked about a January thaw in past posts, a regular occurrence that happens after an extended cold spell.  This year it's a day late as Chicago has moderated from -23 two days ago to 21 above (and climbing).     Growing up outside Chicago in the 50s & 60s, I remember many times going outside without a coat once temperatures rose above 20 after several days below zero.  We find a similar thing here when temps rise back into the 70s after spending several days in the 30s & 40s.    Even though some bloggers are saying it's all because of a warming Planet that makes for more extremes, these events have happened many times in the past and those of us "old folks" do remember it's what happens in Winter.  A lot of bitter cold remains over Alaska & Canada,  but I don't see any signs of a repeat "Polar Vortex" coming during the next 10-14 days.

David pointed out this evening our high chances for seeing some dense fog as we get deeper into warmer air.  Local water temps are in the low to mid 50s and once dew points get into the 60s, buda boom, look for dense fog.   Our next front is not coming until next Thursday so enjoy this warm spell as we are not done with Winter cold just yet.
