In my 42 Summers in NOLA, I cannot remember a REAL cold front in late July. Geez, the climate must be changing for such coolness to reach us! But reach it will as a huge slug of drier air has plunged all the way down to Del Rio & San Antonio, TX. (dewpoints in 50s!) with the Water Vapor loop showing this deep dip in the jet stream heading our way. Wednesday will be delightful with a brisk north breeze making it feel not bad for late July. Thursday should have morning lows in the 60s on the North Shore and away from Lake P. south. Just doesn't happen very often unless it's September or October. Low level moisture will start heading back by Thursday PM with some coastal showers (including Grand Isle) before basic summer time is back for Friday through Sunday. The one uncertainty NHC points out is the SLIGHT (20%) chance that we could see a spin up on the front south of Louisiana late Friday into Sunday. I'm leaning against that because 1) it's G.I. Tarpon Rodeo time and 2) the huge amount of dry air and wind shear should make anything that tries to form a slow process. Let's hope the front sags way far to our south keeping anything that MIGHT form well to our east. So instead of trying to create hype over something that might not ever form, I want you to focus & enjoy this brief Fall preview that may not return for another 8-10 weeks.
The Grand Isle Tarpon Fishing rodeo begins at dawn on Thursday with our 2019 President Jim Henderson in charge. I'll be helping Jim award the trophies in 30 different categories on Saturday night. If the weather cooperates, it should be a great fishing weekend. You don't need a boat and you don't need to fish to win the grand prize (22' fully equipped boat & trailer). Just register at www.tarponrodeo.org. Stay tuned!
