Tropics Taking a Lull?
As Dorian pulls away into the North Atlantic, the rest of the Tropics are very quiet as we near the peak activity period of Sept. 10th. There is a small disturbance just off of Africa that the GFS is developing during the 10-14 day time frame, however, the model turns/recurves it into the Atlantic before it threatens any land areas. The northern Gulf is almost totally clear from Brownsville to north of Tampa. Without clouds, we heat up as today shattered the old record high (93) blasting up to 98! Tomorrow & Sunday look to be repeats with slim & none on our rain chances into mid next week. My former colleague, Jeff Baskin, use to say..."when in drought, leave it (rain chances) out". If you can handle the heat, this weekend looks to be terrific with all day sunshine & highs 96-100.
I came to Ch. 8 back in April 1978. One of the very first weather watchers to call me with her rain total was Miss Betty Deimel of Metairie. I never asked her age, but David posted a picture yesterday saying it was her 97th Birthday. Geez, that made her "only" 56 when she started with me. I salute Miss Betty still going strong after all these years. Congrats!
