Went fishing with my Captain Hylton Petit yesterday and discovered that the trout have returned to areas around Shell Beach. We only caught 25 in the 13-14" size range, but that was 25 more than we caught on previous trips. Salinity levels must have finally recovered after the opening of the Spillway flushed out all the saltwater from the marsh. Today's sunrise was beautiful, but the rain chased us in after only catching 5 fish.
The "Fat Lady" singing last week means we are past the time for a MAJOR landfalling hurricane in SE LA/MS. However, it does not mean we can't see a weaker late season (Juan Oct. 28, 1985) system. Satellite loops are indicating a weak area of low pressure is trying to form over the extreme southern Gulf.
NHC has highlighted an area of likely development and has scheduled a recon flight for later this afternoon. We'll see in their 2 PM discussion whether that flight is still on.
A cold front has passed through us this morning and that front boundary will provide a weakness for whatever forms to follow as it tracks to the NE. The latest American (GFS) model run keeps this low (Nestor?) south & east of the mouth of the river meaning any impacts here will be minor. The cooler air following today's front, plus upper level wind shear should hinder development. Areas along the coast & over the northern Gulf need to pay attention. Stay tuned!
