So my youngest Sister (Carol) up in Indiana says her weather app has gone "crazy" since it says Chicago will be above 60 today. So I went and looked up the afternoon temps, and low and behold, Chicago is above 60!
As I told her...enjoy, because January & February are coming! Often when Winter starts out mild, it reverses itself and turns very cold for 6-8 weeks. The bitterly cold air (50+ below zero) remains stuck up in Alaska & northern Canada and it's only a matter of time before is heads south.
Right now, much of the country is unusually warm as the cold trough is over the West with a upper ridge over the East. As the California storm heads out to the east, the cold will begin shifting too and models still show a much colder pattern developing in January with several significant snowstorms.
It's still too soon to tell how much of the bitter cold reaches us. We'll see a smaller version arrive on Sunday with some storms ahead of the front. Next week will start out cool & nice turning stormy by the end of the week. In the short term, we'll have to deal with low clouds, daily fog, spotty showers and above normal temps (70s). That will end on Sunday after the Saints beat the Panthers. Go Who Dat Nation!
