One thing you'll learn as one gets older is the longer YOU live, the more people in your life will pass on. Last night, Blaine Kern Sr. left us at the age of 93. I met Blaine back in the 80s and found out he loved to fish, even had a camp down near Port Sulphur. At one party he asked if I would like to go fishing with him.
I said absolutely! And so we did bringing along my youngest son (Justin). His camp was being repaired so we stayed at his good friend Charlie's camp. As many of you know, I wore a hairpiece for 40 years. What I didn't know...so did Blaine. Well no one wears a hair piece when they go fishing and can you imagine the surprise when Blaine took off his baseball cap! The next time it was just he and I. I arrived where he kept his boat in Terrytown and he asked me to help him hook the boat up to his truck. Normally, his workers hook up the boat. So the 2 of us think we have it attached and off we go. We were going down some street with a canal in between when we hit a bump and the next thing we know is Blaine sees his boat pass him by on the left. Fortunately it was early with no traffic and the boat didn't veer into the canal. Didn't phase Blaine one bit. We re-hooked up the boat & truck and ended up having a great fishing trip. What a fun guy and I feel so blessed to have shared a part of his life. Good bye old friend, till we meet again...RIP.
Weather wise we have lots of clouds and haze, but very few showers this afternoon. That should be the pattern through the weekend. Skies should become clearer as the current plume of dust leaves and that means temperatures will rebound into the low to mid 90s this weekend.
The clusters of storms over the western Gulf yesterday have drifted inland and farther to the north. The Tropics look to stay quiet for at least the next 7-10 days as more dust spreads off of Africa, This is not out of the ordinary having these dust clouds spread all the way across the Caribbean into the Gulf. Once we get into August & September, the easterlies will decrease and the dust will vanish allowing tropical waves to get better organized. All signs still point to a very active hurricane season. Stay tuned!
