It's Time For The Lady To Sing...

Those of you who are new to this blog might not know the origins of our annual "Fat Lady Singing" once the main threat for hurricanes is over for SE LA/MS.   Back in the 1970s on Monday Night Football, the late Dandy Don Meredith came up with the line, "the game is not over until the "Fat Lady" sings."   I have been using his line for many years to announce what I feel is the end for any major tropical threats HERE.  But the season goes through November as we all know.  However, in modern times (1850-2020) there have only been 2 major hurricanes (1893 Caminada Grand Isle, Hilda 1964) to cross the Louisiana coast in October.  Sure there have been other weaker hurricanes (Juan 1985) cross later in the month, but they have way less impacts than the stronger storms.   So since we have multiple fronts coming, it's time to announce that "The Lady" (notice I eliminated the derogatory term) has been booked for her annual appearance this Thursday night October 1st.   Her performance will be strictly on line due to Covid-19!  More on that tomorrow. Here's the NHC possible development area for later this week.

As I stated in a previous post, we don't need to worry anymore about the systems that come off the African coast as they will be turned long before reaching us.  In addition, I see a huge plume of Saharan dust streaking westward over the Atlantic.  That is stable air and should restrict anything from forming out there for the short term.

Closer in toward the Islands are several clusters of disorganized storms with the one moving over the Dominican Republic probably the system that NHC is watching.  But look over the Gulf at that beautiful cold front, the first of many that will block the northern Gulf from any tropical troubles for the next 7-10 days.

We started with clouds and some lingering showers this morning, but skies cleared and the sun has warmed temps back into the 70 with a great feel to the air.

That's because dew points have dropped into the 40s & 50s and should allow over night temps to dip into the 50s in locations away from Lake Pontchartrain.  After a brief warm up on Thursday, another front arrives early Friday with yet another late Sunday.  Since the Gulf moisture is cut off, no rain is expected with either of those fronts. Clearly all the rain is now to our north & east.  Where they need the rain out West, they remain in a 6 month dry spell and that is allowing fires to keep burning.  Look at the smoke plume over California moving out over the Pacific off of Oregon.

Finally, with only 2 days left in September, I want to pass on this information from CAPS FOR KIDS.
" From all of us at Caps For Kids & all of the kids & families we work with, we want to thank you for your donations this Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.  Your donations will directly help support our mission of bringing smiles to kids battling cancer through signed celebrity hero caps.  There are still 2 days left in September, so we'd like to ask one last time...GIVE A HIGH $5 if you can, and don't forget that we're matching every donation $1 to$1 !   You can donate here.

Thank all of you who have donated already. A young child losing her/his hair can be such a painful experience, but getting a signed baseball cap from their hero eases that pain.  Can you join us in helping these Kids?  Brenda & I really appreciate your time & support.  Stay tuned!
