We Must Not Rebuild The Same Way...

There was a sad picture in today's Advocate showing a restaurant in Lafitte blown off its foundation and broken apart by the winds.   You've seen video after video of all the destroyed homes that were in the direct path of Ida.  However, not all homes broke apart, not all homes lost their roof and not all homes are uninhabitable for months.

Homes/structures from Grand Isle/Fourchon northward through Laplace suffered major damage from both water and winds.   Ida will be upgraded to a Cat. 5 after all the wind reports are in, but look at these winds.

On Grand Isle, the western 2/3 of the Island got crushed with far less damage over the eastern end.  Why?  Money.  The gated communities on the eastern end were built stronger.  We know hurricane shutters work in keeping the windows from breaking in, but they cost money.  We know hurricane clips and straps work to hold the roof on, but they cost money.  We must learn from these storms and not rebuild the same way.  A single/double wide trailer raised up on pilings won't survive the future Ida's.  Let's follow Florida's building codes and build back stronger and more resilient.  Whether it's on the coast or farther inland up the Bayou, we must rebuild stronger.   Otherwise we learn nothing from history and will be doomed to repeat it.

Fortunately, all the tropical activity remains way far away..  Newly formed TD # 20 will become Victor shortly while Hurricane Sam is still a major Hurricane turning northward out to sea.

With the Gulf and Caribbean quiet, we refocus on when our next cold front might come.  Unfortunately, the upper trough is out west over the Rockies bringing them the early season chill.  We might see a weak front here early next week, but it will just dry us out.

With dew points in the 70s, it still feels summer-like.  All the clouds and showers have kept us in the 70s, but it feels soupy.

With today's rainfall, we might jump into the top 5 wettest years.  I'll check on that tomorrow.  It should get drier for this weekend, which will be great for tailgating Sunday for the Saint's first home game.   With October around the corner, drier weather is coming!  Stay tuned!

100%. Raise taxes on the rich and corporations to help rebuild Louisiana communities.

The rich and corporations already pay 80% of taxes. Our elected officials, statewide and federally need to use those taxes more wisely.

I am a retired builder from Morgan City, Hurricane Andrew thought us a lot about how bad a hurricane could be, and FEMA I acted building regulations to compensate for those inadequacies but it wasn’t enough. I,ve spent the Summer in south Florida. Looking at how they build for a hurricane down here. It’s like coastal Central America! Everything is reinforced concrete with tile roofs. I agree with Mr. Breck, there needs to be stricter and better building codes all the way past the I10 corridor. The insurance companies should get tougher also, we are all paying for that guy with the raised house trailer!
