If you wanted a White Christmas, you had to go to the Rockies or the northern tier of states where there are temps below zero. That air mass cannot come southward to us until the upper pattern changes.
The persistent West coast trough is bringing much needed rain and snow to all of the western states while the upper ridge is protecting the South & SE. Note the bottom graphic is valid for January 8th, and if that proves to be reality, we'll finally get in on seasonally cold air. But until then...
The cold front over Missouri will stall out keeping us in the warm air sector for the rest of this week. That should be enough to make this the warmest December on record.
There could be a few showers around midweek, but chance are not that great. New Year's Eve looks much like Christmas, warm & muggy.
