IF their predictions prove to be reality, this freeze will not be as severe as last week's. However, what makes me nervous is the vast amount of Arctic air across the nation. Look at how many locations were below freezing this morning at 7 AM with a large area well below zero.
Farther north in Canada there remains a big pool of super cold (35-40 below) air just waiting to come southward.
Right now it's the quiet before the storm as sprawling high pressure controls the eastern 2/3rds of the Nation with plenty of sunshine from the Rockies to New England.
In the short term, tonight will be chilly again, but I'm not fooling with my plants. Thursday should warm to near 60 if we see enough sunshine. But then, as a low deepens off the East coast on Friday, we'll see north wind increase dragging down more Arctic air for the weekend.
Satellite views had us in the "donut hole" this afternoon with temps warming into the mid to upper 50s except on the South Shore. With Lake waters now in the upper 50s to low 50s, there was a "lake effect" keeping the South Shore 3-5 degrees colder. Based on current computer guidance, this weekend's cold will not be as bad, but I'm probably gonna bring my plants back into my He-Shed Thursday afternoon. We'll give it another look tomorrow. Stay tuned!
