In fact, the longer length of day has really sprouted the grasses & trees.
On this final day of "meteorological Winter", the upper air pattern has shifted forcing out last week's Arctic blast and bringing in a real spring preview.
With no real dip in the jet stream coming for the next 7-10 days, all of the Southeast will see temps. soar into the 70s & 80s, including us.
By the time we see our next blast of cold air (and there will be more blasts), we'll be into mid-March when the chances for a freeze decrease each day. I caution gardeners not to go crazy just yet, but I know I'll be working on my flower beds during the next 2 weeks.
As the surface high moves over us on Tuesday, winds will be light and variable. Note how all the low clouds/moisture have been pushed way down into the Gulf with no signs of return moisture for several days. Clear skies & light winds will mean chilly temps for tonight's parade. Before you leave the house tomorrow, remember the SUNSCREEN! Finally...
All of the warm air up north has put a dent into the snow cover and , coupled with recent rains, created a surge of water coming down the Mississippi River. Fortunately the crest coming in two weeks (12.3') is way below where we need to worry about local impacts. Only the river pilots will need to pay attention to the increased river flow. Hopefully we won't see any excessive spring rains that might involve opening the Spillway again? For now, Happy Mardi Gras Gang! Stay tuned!
