Arctic Blast Still On Track For Our Weekend...

As we head towards mid March. it gets harder for the cold air to plunge into the deep South as the sun angle gets higher.  Unless there is a deep dip in the upper jet stream.

Right now the upper trough is still over the Rockies, but look how the computer model (GFS) is taking that trough eastward.  The 1st computer graphic is from this morning with the next valid for Saturday morning.  The bottom one is valid for Sunday morning.  What I see is a rapidly moving trough that will bring a quick shot of Arctic air followed by a rapid warm up for next week.  The key question is, how deep (far south) will the upper trough dig?

Even though the Canadian air is not as cold as back in January & February, 20-25 below is still plenty cold.  Most of the northern plains have dipped into the teens or single digits.

As you can see, the coldest morning will be on Sunday with a quick warm up coming for next week.  I don't think I'll need to cover any of my tender plants, but we have another day to watch the pattern develop.

Note the 65 in Houston with sunshine this afternoon.  IF our skies clear, we should be in that neighborhood.  However, computer guidance is saying we'll be in the lower 70s tomorrow.  I hope so.

We remain under a low cloud deck this evening and radar indicates we're not done with the rain on the South Shore.  Thursday should be dry before more showers will accompany the cold front late Friday evening.  The cold on Saturday will be enhanced by strong northerly winds of 20-30 + mph.  Bottom line, we are not done with Winter just yet.  Stay tuned!
