If you're a newbie to SE LA/MS experiencing your first summer down South, you're asking the question, "how do people live through 4 1/2 months of brutal heat?" Add in the daily hype from weathercasters ( forced on them by consultants) about the "extreme, dangerous heat" and you start to ask yourself, "how do we live here?" The answer is fairly simple. Our bodies adapt allowing us (with common sense precautions) to survive & thrive. Instead of whining about the heat, I like to look for nuggets telling me it could be worse. For instance, look at this graphic from Zack Fradella comparing last year to this summer.
The top graphic was through July 15th that had us about the same number of 90+ days. Look how that is changing as we get deeper into August. Remember, last August has 12 days above 100+ peaking at 105! So comparing the year to year data, this summer is COOLER/LESS HOT! Now doesn't that make you feel better?!!! Let's get to the Tropics. Beware, the MJO is rotating into the favorable phase over our part of the world for the next 2-3 weeks. Does that mean the MDR is about to explode?
Most models agree the next name (Ernesto) storm will develop early next week. Most models bring him across the islands and near the Bahamas turning him northward away from Florida. The GFS is farther to the west while the Euro is more to the east. Hopefully, it appears this will not be a storm for the Gulf. Why?
Complain about it, but that upper heat dome will block/protect us from any threat.
So yes we stay hot and dry, but no hurricanes? I'll take that deal any day.
Some drier air (lower dew points) have rotated southward around the remains of Debby. So it'll be hot this weekend (duh!), but it should feel as bad. My friend from Phoenix calls it a "dry heat"! Stay tuned!
