Warmest November, Fast Moving Southern System, Weekend Warm up

I forgot to mention that we shattered our record warmest November ever at MSY with the average being 70.2 degrees.  Typically, records are broken by tenths of degrees, but not this November.  Take a look at what the previous warmest Novembers look like.

Interesting to note that 5 out of the ten warmest occurred in the 70s & 80s.  I've mentioned how the weather often works when it's been very warm for awhile.  The pattern flips to a much colder regime, and that has happened over the Great Lakes & Northeast.  The western trough is now over the East with a ridge over the West. A series of upper lows over the Gulf of Alaska has brought much warmer air into Alaska and west Canada.

Where 2 days ago it was 35-40 below zero, today they are 40-50 degrees milder.  We have gotten cooler, but not colder because the Eastern upper trough axis has not dived down to the Gulf Coast.

Another clipper is sinking over the Great Lakes bringing them another shot of snow & Arctic air.  We're being affected by a weak disturbance in the southern Jet stream flow. A warm front has moved inland along the upper TX & SW LA. coasts.  We might briefly get into that air tonight, before we cool back down for Thursday PM into Friday.

Clearly, radar shows the heaviest rainfall will be north of Lake Pontchartrain.  This is not a strong system and the fast movement should limit rain totals to mainly under an inch.

A much stronger disturbance is coming for late Sunday into early on Monday.

There appears to be no cold air with that system, however, by late Tuesday into Wednesday, an even stronger disturbance could trigger some severe southern storms?  Following that will be a big cooldown for late next week.  This is to be expected for this time of year.  It's why many folks get sick as the temperatures go up and down.  If you want to see some real snow, you have to go out west.

Skies are clear under that upper ridge so all the white is snow on the ground.  Ski season is open and going in full force!  I'm not giving up on a December snow event here, just not for the next 7 days.  Stay tuned!
