Astronomical Summer Arrives, Summer Heat Hype Coming, Fewer Weekend Storms

Those of us who live in the South know summertime heat has been here for weeks. Meteorological summer (hottest 3 months) began on June 1st.  However, Astronomical summer (orbit of Earth around the sun) begins tonight at 9:42 PM, making today and Saturday the longest days of the year with regard to daylight. It's when the tilt of the Earth has the northern hemisphere in more sunlight.

Yesterday, we mentioned how an upper heat dome would move over us and head to the Northeast. That hasn't changed as the GFS model shifts the center of the Heat Dome from the Central Plains to the East Coast.

The middle graphic is valid for Sunday with the bottom valid for next Tuesday.  By then our flow should be more out of the East-Southeast allowing for increased rain chances to return.  You can really see the heat dome on the temperatures.

Those 100+ temps will slide to the East Coast under the dome and the nightly news programs will over hype the "life threatening" heat like it's never happened before.  For us, we've been acclimated to the heat for weeks and until it gets into the upper 90s, the heat is no big deal.

Storm coverage was way less today and that should be the case for Saturday into Sunday, resulting in temps. reaching the middle 90s.

I will try not to complain/whine about the heat since it's only mid-June.  Wait until late July into August.  Enjoy your weekend, and just use common sense if you're outside for many hours.  Stay tuned!
