Today is a national holiday where we honor all those who have served our country, some even gave their lives. I wanted to mention yesterday was the 250th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps, but the cable outage shorted out my brain. Semper Fi (Always Faithful) to all my fellow Marines. It was 55 years ago this little fella struggled his way through boot camp proudly being the only one in my platoon of 65 to earn "expert rifleman ship" medal. I later completed an inter-service transfer to the U.S. Air Force's Air Weather Service(AWS) where I could put my degree in meteorology to use. My personal opinion is everyone should have to serve at least a year to our country in some capacity. Then you'll understand the Lee Greenwood song "Proud to be an American".
Gosh it's hard to believe I was once so young looking! That picture was taken just before my 23rd birthday in 1970. It was also hard to believe how cold it was this morning.
Many people understood what freezing feels like, especially on the North Shore. Lots of locations set new records with MSY missing it by one degree. If this upper pattern develops during the next 2-3 months, we'll be looking at hard freezes, even on the South Shore. Of course for you snow geeks, could we see a repeat of earlier this year?
This was my backyard in January where I had to shovel a path for my Bailey Girl to do what dogs do! I bought her for $700 15 years ago.
I walked her everyday for 14 years and dearly miss her. I'm very grateful for all the joy she brought into my life. Those of you with animals know they become our children, our family and it's very difficult to say goodbye. Thank you Bailey!
The cold air has been driven all the way down into the Yucatan & south Florida by this deep dip in the Jet Stream, but it won't last. You can see the cold air clouds off the East Coast & down over the Gulf.
There are no signs of return moisture yet, but winds are already turning to the south meaning tonight will not be as chilly. Once dew points reach 50+, morning fog problems will return. Note Houston is already 70+.
Look for temps to tumble tonight after sunset, but level off as the south winds bring back the moisture.
We will quickly return to a summer-like feel for the rest of this week. Get use to the roller coaster temperature rides for the next 3-4 months. Finally,
